Picture 30Having only just graduated from the AAA School of Advertising in December 2009, Caryanne Cleevely is poised to make a grand entrance onto the South African creative stage. The young graphic designer has been selected to present her work at the annual Design Indaba Expo, taking place from the 26th to the 28th of February.  Cleevely will have an audience of over 200 prominent buyers and influential journalists from around the world, not to mention top local and international designers.

“I’m thrilled to be part of such a prestigious international event that showcases the very best in the world of design,” says Cleevely. “The Design Indaba represents all that creativity has to offer, and it’s an honour to have been selected as an emerging creative to exhibit my work.”

A multi-sectoral showcase of style and diversity, the Design Indaba Expo includes advertising, architecture, craft, décor, film, fashion, graphic design, interior design, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual media. An integral part of the Design Indaba initiative each year is the identification of an emerging creative, who could be either a student in the creative faculty at a tertiary institution in South Africa, or a designer in the industry who is in the process of establishing their own design service or business.

“Caryanne is an extremely talented and hard-working individual and I have no doubt that she will make the most of this opportunity,” says Ludi Koekemoer, Principal of the AAA School of Advertising. “She is well-equipped with everything that she needs to make her mark on the industry.”

After having spent eight years working in the corporate arena, Cleevely could no longer resist her creative calling and decided to pursue a degree in graphic design. With the goal of opening up her own studio, Cleevely worked part-time while studying, designing corporate identities, brochures and invitations for small to medium-sized businesses. Her work soon took off, and in 2007 she established her own company called Sublime Design. Today, the business has grown into a well managed marketing and events company which Cleevely part owns with her sister.

“I love to be inspired through other people’s creative talents, through music, through nature and the diversity of people that share this earth,” explains Cleevely. “The most important part of my design process – which is a leaf I took from my lecturers at AAA – is to do extensive research… information is knowledge, and I believe it empowers you to achieve great things.”

Cleevely successfully completed a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Brand Communications from the AAA School of Advertising in December 2009. Founded in 1986 and owned by the Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA) since 1990, the AAA School of Advertising is the official higher education institution for the South African advertising industry, with campuses in Johannesburg and Cape Town and a satellite campus in Mauritius.
