7 JUNE – 11 JULY – CAPE TOWN’S WINTER TONIC

The 6thVodacom Funny Festival, Cape Town’s premier comedy festival runs for the duration of the FIFA World Cup 2010 at the Baxter Theatre. The popular annual event, which has become “Cape Town’s Winter Tonic”, opens on 7th June and runs for five weeks through to 11th July.

The acclaimed production showcases a range of international performers from the brilliant UK ventriloquist Paul Zerdin (7-23 June), to the musical comedy genius of The Raymond and Mr Timpkins Revue from London (7- 28 June) to the zany antics of “Spanish Testosterone King,” Paul Morocco from the US (24 June – 7 July), to Freddie Mercury’s alter ego, Mario: Queen of the Circus, (29 June – 11 July) direct from a full house run with La Clique in Paris and the effervescent presence of Craig Hill from Scotland (22 June – 11 July).
The local line-up includes Riaad Moosa, Ndumiso Lindi, Alan Committie (7 – 21 June) and Al Prodgers.

The hugely popular festival was awarded Official Event status by Cape Town’s tourism authorities, and now carries the insignia of the Cape of Great Events. It is the only comedy project in the city to have been awarded the accolade.
The sought after Paul Zerdin is one of the top artists in his field in the world and recently earned critical acclaim from Her Majesty, the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance in London in December.

Zerdin is hilarious and has a range of dolls, one of which is a member of the audience! He performs nightly from 7-23 June.

Combining a range of popular rock hits, the musical comedy genius of The Raymond and Mr Timpkins Revue from London returns to the Festival after a short visit last year. Their literal interpretation of popular tunes with a collection of prop-assisted material and some serial wordplay has created a very funny routine.  The comic masterpiece is a hit in the UK, where they headline in all the major comedy clubs and summer festivals. They perform at the Funny Festival for three weeks from 7-28 June.

The zany antics of “Spanish Testosterone King,” Paul Morocco from the US are a winner on any festival. He plays and throws his Spanish Guitar, sings and juggles ping-pong balls with circus precision and creates a sublime and zany world that is unorthodox and unpredictable. However, the audience get it straight away in every language, providing Morocco says “they have sun in their hearts”.

Morocco is the creator of the cult show “Ole” that has been thrilling audiences worldwide. Paul Morocco appears on the Vodacom Funny Festival 24 June to 7 July.

Mario: Queen of the Circus joins the Festival direct from the popular vaudeville show La Clique, which has been running to full houses for months on end in Paris and London.

The Latin casanova’s hilarious full-length show and irresistible variety numbers have wooed audiences where ever he performs. Mario’s unique mix of complex juggling tricks and universal sex appeal rocks the audience to his favourite rock anthems by super group Queen. The American performs in Cape Town from 29 June to11 July.

The festival is hosted by the inimitable Alan Committie (7-21) June and the effervescent Craig Hill (22 June – 11 July) from Edinburgh.
