Korwe Clinches First Round Funding to Drive SA’s Mobile Tech Leadership

Basic R&D in mobile technology moves forward in SA through investment in
business-centric technology innovation
Cape Town 23 September 2009 Korwe Software, a South African pioneer in
engineering and development for mobile applications, has received its first
round of funding from SPII <http://www.spii.co.za/> , the support programme
for industrial innovation managed by the IDC for the Department of Trade and
Industry. This will allow Korwe to continue to pursue fundamental research
into new mobile software technologies even as it expands its commercial
contract work with corporate clients.
Korwe has been self-funding its growth since it was founded in 2003 through
a number of software development projects for SA corporates, developing core
technologies that allow them to deploy online services to their customers
via mobile phone. The SPII funding, the first of three rounds, allows Korwe
to allocate more resources to its R&D into The Core, the mobile application
engine that lies at the core of the business.
³Funding from SPII is a strong endorsement for Korwe¹s technology vision,
which is based on the concept of ŒJust the Right Information¹ as a design
philosophy, and centred on the dotmobi technology paradigm, which is the
quickest, simplest and most powerful way to provide a personalised end user
experience on mobile phones,² says Nithia Govender, CEO of Korwe Software.
³There is no question that mobile services will become not only the first,
but the easiest way for people to look for information and to communicate.
We are very encouraged that the DTI is so aware of the pressing need for
South African technology companies to stay globally competitive in this
space, and is investing accordingly,² comments Govender.
Korwe¹s technology allows companies to roll out mobile services faster and
more reliably, using The Core as a powerful tool to bring to bear contextual
information that dramatically simplifies the end-user experience, making it
simpler and more natural. In addition it makes the deployment of new
services easy for the operator and leverages existing data sources for the
enterprise.
The Core provides a system to manage and increase value for users in their
social networks. Information that enters a network can be optimally tuned to
flow across it in a way that makes it more intelligent.
Korwe¹s technology solves many of the tricky technical problems inherent in
mobile, as well as introducing context to interactions, allowing Web service
developers to focus on their users¹ requirements, especially in terms or
reducing how much navigation or input they need to engage in to get what
they want.
